A desert cooler is not a cheap air conditioner, and anyone who sells you one without saying so is setting you up for disappointment. It cools by evaporating water into the air — which means it works brilliantly when the air is dry and hot, and poorly when the air is already humid. In Delhi that maps almost exactly onto the calendar. From roughly April to the end of June, when it is 42°C and bone dry, this machine will make a genuine and dramatic difference for 150 watts. Once the monsoon arrives in July and the humidity climbs, evaporation slows down, the cooling effect fades, and adding more moisture to already-damp air makes a room feel worse rather than better. If you want cooling in July and August, you want an air conditioner. If you want to get through the dry heat cheaply, this is the right machine — and it will pay for itself against an AC's running cost in a single season.
A desert cooler needs an open window — this is not optional
This is the single most common mistake people make, and it's the reason a good cooler gets returned as "not cooling". A desert cooler must draw in dry outside air, cool it through the wet pads, and push it into the room — and the humid air it creates has to go somewhere. Run it in a sealed room and within an hour you have recirculated the same air until it is saturated, at which point evaporation stops and you have a loud fan blowing damp air at you. Keep a window or a door open. Ideally the cooler sits at a window drawing fresh air from outside, with an opening on the far side of the room for air to escape through. That cross-flow is what makes the difference between a cooler that works and one that doesn't — and it is the exact opposite of how you run an AC.
Everlast pump and honeycomb pads — the two parts that actually fail
Ask anyone whose cooler died in year two and it was almost always the pump. Delhi water is hard and high in dissolved solids, and in an ordinary cooler pump that mineral load builds into scale until the impeller jams — usually in the middle of May. The Everlast pump is built specifically for that condition, and on a machine that will run ten hours a day for three months it is the specification most worth having. The honeycomb pads are the other consumable: high-density honeycomb holds far more water than the old wood-wool pads, so you get more cooling from the same airflow, and it doesn't rot or collapse the way khus pads do. Pads are still a wear item — expect to replace them every couple of seasons, more often in very hard water. Ask us for the pad price when you buy so there's no surprise later.
