✨ Dyson Airstrait™ HT01. No Hot Plates. Wet-to-Dry Air Straightening. 6 Temperature Modes. 45° Directional Airflow. 16×/Sec Heat Control. Auto Pause. LCD. Bright Nickel/Bright Copper.
The Dyson Airstrait™ is a fundamentally different approach to hair straightening — it uses high-pressure heated airflow instead of hot plates, eliminating the direct high-heat surface contact that causes protein breakdown and moisture loss in hair. Dries and straightens simultaneously in three wet modes (80°C, 100°C, 115°C); three dry modes for refresh or touch-up (100°C, 130°C, Boost); glass bead thermistors regulate temperature 16 times per second; 45° downward airflow creates natural strand tension for smooth, frizz-free results without mechanical pressure; Auto Pause stops airflow after 3 seconds of inactivity; LCD displays live settings. 1600W. 998g. Bright Nickel/Bright Copper. Made in Philippines.
No Hot Plates — why eliminating direct heat contact is a fundamental advance in hair straightening
Traditional flat iron straighteners work by clamping hair between two heated plates at 180°C–230°C and sliding the plates along the hair shaft. The heat transfers from the plate surface directly into the hair through physical contact — a highly efficient heat transfer mechanism that raises hair temperature rapidly. Hair proteins (primarily keratin) begin to denature at approximately 150°C; the water molecules trapped within the hair shaft flash-vaporise when the hair reaches temperatures above 100°C, causing micro-bubbles within the hair cortex that weaken the internal structure. At the plate contact temperatures commonly used for thick or coarse hair (200°C–230°C), repeated use causes cumulative protein breakdown, moisture loss, and progressive thinning of the hair cuticle. The Dyson Airstrait™ eliminates the hot plate contact entirely — instead, heated air at a controlled temperature is projected through the hair tress as it passes through the arms of the tool. Air is a far less efficient heat conductor than metal plate contact, which means the hair's temperature rise is more gradual and controlled; the Airstrait's maximum airflow temperature of 130°C (Dry mode) is significantly below the temperatures at which rapid protein denaturation occurs; and because there is no mechanical plate pressure, the hair cuticle scales are not physically compressed or abraded. The glass bead thermistors embedded in the tool arms measure the actual airflow temperature 16 times per second, ensuring the air temperature stays precisely at the selected setting throughout the styling pass — there are no local temperature spikes from a plate surface that has concentrated heat from sitting in contact with one section of hair too long.
🌡️ Six temperature modes — wet styling and dry refresh
💧 Wet Mode — Dries + Straightens
Start with towel-dried hair. Lower temperatures for fine or damaged hair; 115°C for thick or coarse hair. Dries roots first, then sections from wet to styled in one continuous pass.
🔥 Dry Mode — Refresh + Touch-Up
Refresh day-old style or touch up specific sections. Boost mode for maximum styling impact on resistant hair. No need to re-wet — use on fully dry hair for a fast mid-day refresh.
Glass Bead Thermistors — 16 measurements per second, located in the tool arms
The thermistors in the Airstrait's arms are not measuring the heater element temperature — they're measuring the actual airflow temperature at the point where air exits onto the hair. This is a critical distinction: heater element temperature and airflow temperature can diverge significantly when airflow rate changes (moving the tool faster increases airflow, lowering temperature; slowing down reduces airflow, raising temperature). By measuring at the delivery point 16 times per second — approximately every 62 milliseconds — the control system can adjust heater output in near real-time to maintain the selected temperature regardless of how quickly or slowly the tool is being moved through the hair section. For a user who naturally varies their styling speed between sections, this continuous compensation keeps the heat exposure consistent across the entire head — no hot spots from slow passes, no under-styling from fast passes.
45° Downward Airflow — tension-based straightening without mechanical pressure
The Airstrait projects its airflow downward at 45° — not straight through the hair section but at a downward angle that creates aerodynamic tension along the hair strand as the tool moves down the section. This tension is the mechanism that aligns the hair cuticle scales flat and straightens the hair shaft — without any plate pressure, the straightening effect comes from the combination of heat (relaxing the hydrogen bonds that hold the hair in its natural curl pattern) and directed airflow tension (holding the hair straight while those bonds reset in the straight position as the hair cools). The 45° angle is engineered specifically to maximise this tension effect — horizontal airflow would push air through the hair section without creating meaningful strand tension; vertical downward airflow would create turbulence; 45° delivers the optimal combination of tension and through-section airflow for smooth, frizz-free results.
Auto Pause + LCD Display
Auto Pause stops airflow automatically after 3 seconds of inactivity — when you set the tool down to section hair, clip a section, or answer the phone, airflow stops immediately, preventing concentrated heat exposure to one hair section. Moving the tool resumes airflow instantly without any button press. The LCD display shows the live temperature setting and mode (wet/dry) clearly at a glance — no guessing which mode is active mid-session when managing six different temperature options.
Wet-to-Dry — The Time-Saving Use Case
Standard hair straightening workflow: wash hair → towel dry → blow dry with separate dryer → section and straighten with flat iron → two tools, two sessions, 45–60 minutes total. The Airstrait workflow: wash hair → towel dry → pre-dry roots with Airstrait → section and straighten with Airstrait → one tool, one session. The time saving is not just convenience — it also means the hair is exposed to styling heat for a shorter total duration, reducing cumulative heat exposure per styling session.
Bright Nickel/Bright Copper Colourway
The HT01-BNBC-IN colourway combines polished nickel silver body panels with bright copper accents — a warm metallic palette that reflects the Dyson design aesthetic of premium materials in an engineering-forward product. The aluminium construction keeps weight at 998g despite the 1600W motor — meaningful for a tool held at shoulder height and moved continuously through a styling session that may last 20–40 minutes.
1600W — Airflow Power for Wet Styling
1600W powers the high-pressure airflow needed to effectively dry and straighten wet hair simultaneously. The wattage is directed into the digital motor that generates the high-velocity airflow — not into heating plates. For context, a 1600W hair dryer produces vigorous drying airflow; the Airstrait concentrates this airflow through the precision exit geometry of the tool arms, focusing it onto the hair section being styled at the controlled temperature rather than dispersing it broadly as a dryer does.
