Worth knowing before you decide on size

This is a 1 star model using around 202 kWh a year. Our 268 litre Godrej EMARVEL — nearly three times the capacity — is 3 star and uses about 172 kWh a year, so it is both bigger and cheaper to run. The Champ still makes sense where space is genuinely tight or the budget is fixed, but if you have the room and the money, the larger model is the better long-term buy. We would rather tell you that than sell you the smaller one.

A star rating measures efficiency, not total consumption — so a small fridge with a low rating can quite easily use more electricity than a bigger fridge with a better one. That is exactly what happens here. This 97 litre 1 star model draws around 202 kWh a year; our 268 litre 3 star EMARVEL draws around 172 kWh a year for nearly three times the space. So do not buy the smaller fridge expecting a smaller bill — that is not how it works out. Buy this one because it physically fits somewhere a large fridge cannot, because it costs less up front, or because you only need a little cold storage. Those are all good reasons. Lower running cost is not one of them, and we would rather be straight with you now than have you work it out from the bill in six months.

The whole point of this refrigerator is its size, so it is worth thinking about placement properly rather than assuming. At 85 cm tall it slides under most kitchen counters, which are typically around 90 cm — but check your own, because a countertop overhang or a skirting board can cost you the clearance. The footprint is 56.8 by 48.7 cm, roughly the space of a bedside table. Two placement points that matter. Leave a gap behind and above it: the coil at the back sheds heat, and a fridge boxed tightly into a cabinet recess will run hot, cost more to run and fail sooner — so if it is going under a counter, make sure air can circulate. And at 22.6 kg it is light enough for two people to carry up to a hostel room or a first-floor PG, which a full-size fridge is not. Bring your measurements and we will check it against the unit in the shop.

🌡️

Direct cool means you will defrost it yourself

Direct cool refrigerators cool by natural convection — the cold surface sits in the small freezer section and cold air falls into the cabinet below. There is no fan and no heater, which is why direct cool models are simpler, cheaper and hold humidity better for vegetables. The trade-off is frost. Moisture from the air and from your food freezes onto that cold surface, and over a few weeks it builds into a layer of ice that eats into the freezer space and makes the fridge work harder. Clearing it is straightforward: switch the fridge off, empty the freezer section, leave the door open and let the ice melt, then wipe it dry and switch it back on. Expect to do that every few weeks, more often in humid weather. Never chip at it with a knife or screwdriver — puncturing that surface releases the refrigerant and the appliance is finished.

The recessed handle matters more than it sounds on a small fridge — with nothing sticking out, it slides into a counter recess or a corner without the handle fouling the cabinet.

97 litres is genuinely small — milk, eggs, a few vegetables, bottles and leftovers, with a small freezer for ice. For a family, or for anyone doing a weekly vegetable shop, this will be full by Tuesday; ask us about a 268 litre model instead.

🥬 Jumbo Vegetable Tray

A proper crisper drawer, which many 90–100 litre fridges skip entirely — it keeps produce from drying out on an open shelf.

🍾 Large Bottle Storage

Door shelving takes full-size water and soft drink bottles upright, which is what people actually keep in a compact fridge.

🧊 Quick Ice Zone

A dedicated ice section rather than just a shelf — useful through a Delhi summer in a hostel or shop.

🛡️ 5-Year Compressor Cover

The compressor is the expensive part and the one that ends a fridge's life. Five years on it at this price is worth having.

⚠️ A refrigerator that runs continuously for years. Please read this. 1. If it has been laid down or tilted in transport, stand it upright for several hours before switching on. Compressor oil needs to settle back, and starting too early can wreck the compressor — the commonest avoidable way a new fridge fails. 2. Leave clearance behind and above it. This matters especially here, because a compact fridge often goes under a counter or into a recess. The rear coil must be able to shed heat; box it in and it runs hot, uses more power and fails sooner. 3. Do not defrost with a knife, screwdriver or any sharp tool. Puncturing the freezer surface releases refrigerant and ends the appliance. Switch it off and let the ice melt. 4. Stand it level on a firm floor so the door seals properly and the compressor does not vibrate — at 22.6 kg it is light enough to rock on an uneven surface. 5. Two people to lift and carry it, and keep it upright throughout. 6. Connect to a properly earthed socket, not through a light-duty extension board. 7. Ask us about a stabiliser — Delhi NCR voltage swings at peak load and a compressor is expensive to lose. 8. Do not store petrol, solvents, aerosols or any flammable or pressurised item inside. 9. Do not put hot food straight in — let it cool first. 10. Keep the door seal clean; a failed seal quietly raises running cost and causes frost to build faster. 11. Do not place it in direct sunlight or beside a stove, oven or heater. 12. Do not let children hang on the door or climb inside, and remove the door before disposing of any old refrigerator. 13. Unplug before cleaning or defrosting, and never spray water into or behind the unit. 14. Stop using it and call us if the cord or plug is damaged, if it trips your supply, or if you smell burning or gas.

Warranty as per Godrej terms and conditions — 1 year comprehensive warranty on the product and 5 years on the compressor as stated in supplier material. The scope of cover, parts and labour, what the compressor warranty covers in years two to five including whether labour and gas charging are included, exclusions, product registration and the service process are subject to brand policy and the final invoice or warranty card and should be confirmed before purchase. Damage arising from misuse, incorrect installation, operation without adequate ventilation clearance, unsuitable or unstabilised electrical supply, damage to the evaporator during defrosting or unauthorised servicing is commonly excluded. Freezer compartment capacity, vegetable tray capacity in litres, defrost type, compressor type including whether it is an inverter compressor, door orientation, stabiliser requirement, operating voltage and range, refrigerant type and the BEE rating year are not stated in supplier material and should be confirmed before purchase; direct cool refrigerators normally require periodic manual defrosting of the freezer compartment. Capacity, energy consumption of approximately 202 kWh per year, BEE star rating, dimensions and weight are manufacturer specifications determined under standard test conditions; actual energy consumption varies with ambient temperature, door openings, load, thermostat setting, ventilation clearance and supply voltage, and the star rating and rating year should be verified on the product energy label at purchase. A BEE star rating denotes energy efficiency relative to capacity and is not a measure of total consumption; a smaller appliance with a lower star rating may consume more electricity in absolute terms than a larger appliance with a higher rating, and the comparison with a larger model referred to on this page is based on the annual consumption figures stated by the manufacturer for each model. Running cost depends on the applicable electricity tariff slab and usage and should be calculated against the purchaser's own tariff. Explanations of direct cool operation, frost formation and defrosting provided here are general information to aid understanding and are not manufacturer specifications. This product is a household appliance and not a medical device; no health, nutritional or food-safety outcome is claimed or implied, and normal food hygiene and storage practice should be followed. The appliance must be moved by two people, kept upright, and allowed to stand upright for several hours before being switched on if it has been tilted or transported lying down. It must be installed level on a firm floor with adequate ventilation clearance at the rear and above, particularly where installed under a counter or within a recess, connected to a properly earthed socket, and must not be connected through light-duty extension boards. Sharp implements must never be used to remove frost, as puncturing the evaporator releases refrigerant and renders the appliance unserviceable. Flammable or pressurised items must not be stored inside. The appliance should not be placed in direct sunlight or adjacent to cooking appliances or heaters. The door seal should be kept clean and checked periodically. Children must not be permitted to hang on the door or enter the appliance, and doors should be removed before disposal of any old refrigerator. Discontinue use and disconnect the appliance if the cord or plug is damaged, if it trips the electrical supply, or if burning or gas odour is detected.
