Ion-exchange softening works by passing water through a resin bed where calcium and magnesium ions (the minerals that cause scale, reduce detergent efficacy, and cloud glassware) are permanently exchanged for sodium ions — the water that enters the wash chamber has had its hardness minerals physically removed rather than temporarily altered. The salt refill funnel in the included accessories is used to regenerate the resin periodically (typically every 1–4 weeks depending on water hardness and usage frequency) — pouring dishwasher salt into the refill point flushes the accumulated calcium and magnesium from the resin, restoring its softening capacity.
