Most people who ask us about a Galaxy S phone have already decided on Samsung. What they haven't decided is how much phone they need. They stand at the counter with one in each hand, and the first thing they mention is the price gap.
So here's the conversation we have across the counter, written down, with Samsung's own published specs instead of adjectives. And because this page started life as a Galaxy S23 comparison, we've kept a proper answer to that one further down, for anybody holding an S23 and wondering whether it's time.
Galaxy S26 vs S26 Ultra: which one should you buy?
Buy the S26 if you want a flagship that fits in one hand, and buy the S26 Ultra if the camera, the big screen or the S Pen is the reason you're upgrading. They share the same software, the same seven years of updates and the same IP68 rating. Everything else on the Ultra is more: more screen, more battery, more zoom, faster charging, and a lot more money.
People ask us which one is better when what they mean is which one is better for them, and those have different answers. The Ultra is the better phone on paper in nearly every row of the spec sheet. That doesn't make it the right phone for someone who mostly uses WhatsApp, maps and the odd photo of the kids, and who'd rather not carry a 214 gram slab in a shirt pocket.
Here's the quick way to settle the S26 vs S26 Ultra question. If you can name the feature you're buying the Ultra for, and you'll use it most weeks, buy the Ultra. If you can't, the S26 will make you just as happy and leave a large sum in your account.
What's actually different between the S26 and S26 Ultra?
The screen, the cameras, the battery, the charging speed, the S Pen and a privacy screen, and every one of them favours the Ultra. Here they are side by side, every figure from Samsung's own launch specification sheet.

One honest note on that processor row, because customers spot it. Samsung's spec sheet says the S26 runs either the Snapdragon chip or Samsung's own Exynos 2600, and that it varies by market. The Ultra is Snapdragon everywhere. If the chip inside matters to you, ask us to check the exact unit before you pay. If it doesn't, don't let the row worry you, because Samsung's own spec sheet lists both chips for the same S26 model.

Is the S26 Ultra camera worth the extra money?
Yes if you zoom, shoot at night or photograph things far away, and no if your photos are mostly people standing a few feet from you. For that second kind of photo, the S26's 50 MP main camera is excellent and you'd struggle to pick its pictures out from the Ultra's on a phone screen.
For most buyers, the S26 vs S26 Ultra choice comes down to the camera. The difference shows up at distance. The S26 has one telephoto, a 3x. The Ultra has two, a 3x and a 50 MP 5x, plus a 200 MP main sensor that crops to 2x, and a 10x that Samsung calls optical quality, cropped from the 5x camera. A stage at a wedding, a child across a cricket ground. The people who come back pleased with an Ultra are almost always the ones who told us about a picture like that before they bought it.
Here's something worth knowing, especially if you're coming from an S23 Ultra. That phone had a true 10x optical lens. The S26 Ultra's longest optical lens is 5x, and its 10x is cropped from the 50 MP sensor, which Samsung labels optical quality zoom rather than optical zoom. On paper the new 5x lens is much brighter, f/2.9 against the old 10x lens's f/4.9, so it lets in more light. Our advice is to hold both and try a 10x shot of something across the showroom before you decide it's a downgrade, because it usually isn't.
Which has better battery life, the S26 or the S26 Ultra?
The Ultra, because it carries a 5,000 mAh battery against the S26's 4,300, and it refills faster too. That's about 16% more capacity. It also drives a bigger, sharper screen, so the real gap is smaller.
The chart tells a story people don't expect. The small S has quietly caught up, with 400 mAh more than the S23 had.
Charging is where the Ultra pulls clear. Samsung quotes up to 75% in about 30 minutes with a 60W adapter, against up to 55% in about 30 minutes for the S26 with a 25W adapter. Here's the practical bit nobody mentions at the till: Samsung's own spec sheet says the adapter is sold separately, so neither phone comes with a charging brick. If you're upgrading from an old phone with a slow charger, budget for a new adapter, or you'll be charging a flagship at yesterday's speed and wondering why.
Is the Galaxy S26 too small?
For most hands it isn't, and for a lot of people it's the main reason to choose it. The S26 is a 6.3 inch phone that weighs 167 g. The Ultra is 6.9 inches and 214 g. That's 47 g between them, and you feel it in a trouser pocket by evening.
This is the part of the S26 vs S26 Ultra decision that a spec sheet can't make for you. We always ask people to hold both, phone to ear, then type a message one handed. Plenty of customers who walked in certain they wanted the Ultra change their minds right there, and plenty go the other way because they read a lot on the phone and the bigger screen wins. What we don't want is somebody discovering the weight on day three.
Do the S26 and S26 Ultra get the same updates and Galaxy AI?
Yes on updates, and mostly yes on AI, with two features that only the Ultra gets. Samsung India says the S26 series gets seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, and both phones launched on Android 16 with One UI 8.5 (Samsung Newsroom India).
So on software, the S26 vs S26 Ultra gap is small. The Galaxy AI tools Samsung leads with, like Photo Assist, Now Brief, Now Nudge and Circle to Search, are described as series features. The Ultra-only items are the Privacy Display, which narrows what people beside you can see on the screen, and ProScaler image sharpening, which Samsung's footnotes list for the S26+ and S26 Ultra only.
If you're on a crowded metro every day and you open your banking app on the way, Privacy Display is the one feature people tell us they hadn't thought about and now want.
Is there much difference between the S23 and S23 Ultra?
Yes, and it was the same kind of difference as now: the Ultra had the bigger screen, the 200 MP camera, a true 10x zoom lens, the S Pen and faster charging. This page used to compare the S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra, and a lot of people still arrive asking exactly that, so here's the straight answer from Samsung's 2023 launch specifications.

The old version of this page got a few things wrong, and we'd rather fix them than leave them standing. It gave the S23 Ultra a screen resolution that doesn't match Samsung's own QHD+ rating, it quoted brightness figures we couldn't match to Samsung's specification sheet so we've taken them out, and it linked to an S23 Ultra listing that no longer exists.
Should you upgrade from an S23 or S23 Ultra to the S26 series?
If your S23 still lasts the day and you're happy with it, there's no rush, but if the battery's fading, the S26 is a bigger step up than most people expect. Samsung promised the S23 series four Android upgrades and five years of security updates from its 2023 launch. The S26 series is promised seven of each, so a new S26 has a much longer road ahead of it.
From a base S23 to an S26 you gain 400 mAh, a slightly bigger screen at almost the same weight, slightly faster charging and the newer chip. From an S23 Ultra to an S26 Ultra you lose 20 g and a millimetre, gain 60W charging, a 50 MP ultra wide and a wider f/1.4 main lens, and trade the true 10x for the 5x plus cropped 10x we described above. Most S23 Ultra owners we talk to are upgrading for the battery and the speed, not the camera, and they're usually glad they did.
One thing we always say: back up your phone before you come in, and bring the old one. Samsung's Smart Switch moves the lot across, and it's far less stressful done at a counter with someone who's done it a few hundred times.
Which Galaxy S26 do we hand people at the counter?
One of these two, and which one depends on the answer to a single question: what will you use the extra for? Prices move through the year, so these are the bands each one sits in, not a figure that'll be wrong next month.
