💧 Multi-stage purification — what each stage removes
🔍 Pre-Filtration
Sediment filter removes large particles, dust, dirt, and suspended solids — protects RO membrane from physical fouling
💧 Reverse Osmosis (RO)
Semi-permeable membrane under pressure — removes dissolved salts (TDS), heavy metals (lead, mercury), pesticides, microplastics, bacteria, viruses, nitrates
☀️ UV E-Boiling
Ultraviolet lamp destroys DNA of surviving microorganisms — equivalent to 20 min boiling disinfection. Inactivates bacteria, viruses, cysts
🔬 RO vs UV vs RO+UV — why both are needed for complete purification
RO Alone
- ✔ Removes dissolved TDS, salts, metals
- ✔ Removes microplastics
- ✔ Reduces bacteria physically
- ✗ Does not inactivate all viruses
- ✗ Cannot guarantee 99.9999% microbial kill
UV Alone
- ✔ Kills bacteria and viruses
- ✗ Does NOT remove dissolved TDS
- ✗ Does NOT remove heavy metals
- ✗ Does NOT remove pesticides
- ✗ Not suitable for high-TDS borewell water
RO + UV (Sure Champ)
- ✔ Removes dissolved TDS up to 2000 ppm
- ✔ Removes heavy metals + pesticides
- ✔ 99.9999% bacteria kill (6-log)
- ✔ 99.99% virus inactivation (4-log)
- ✔ Suitable for borewell + tanker + municipal
Reverse Osmosis — how semi-permeable membrane filtration removes dissolved contaminants
Osmosis is the natural tendency of water to move across a semi-permeable membrane from a region of low dissolved-solids concentration to a region of high dissolved-solids concentration (equalising concentration on both sides). Reverse Osmosis applies hydraulic pressure to the high-concentration (contaminated) water side that exceeds its osmotic pressure — this forces water molecules through the semi-permeable membrane from the high-TDS side to the low-TDS (purified) side, while dissolved salts, heavy metals, and other large dissolved molecules are physically unable to pass through the membrane's sub-nanometre pores. The RO membrane pore size (approximately 0.0001 microns) is smaller than the hydrated ionic radius of dissolved salts — sodium, calcium, magnesium, lead, mercury, nitrate ions, and most organic compounds cannot pass through. This is why RO is the only domestic purification technology that meaningfully reduces TDS — UV, UF, and standard carbon filters have no mechanism for removing dissolved ions. The Sure Champ's 2000 ppm input TDS specification means it can purify water with up to 2000 mg of dissolved solids per litre — covering typical Delhi NCR groundwater (borewell/tubewell water in many Delhi NCR areas tests at 500–1500 ppm TDS, with some borewells exceeding 2000 ppm in calcium/fluoride-rich geological areas). A key characteristic of RO purification is that it produces two streams: purified permeate water and reject/concentrate water that contains the concentrated removed contaminants. The reject water is typically discharged to drain — the ratio of purified water to reject water (recovery rate) varies by membrane and system design. Buyers should verify the Sure Champ's recovery rate at purchase to understand how much water is produced vs discharged per litre of input water.
UV E-Boiling — what ultraviolet disinfection does that RO alone cannot guarantee
UV (Ultraviolet) disinfection uses short-wavelength ultraviolet light (UV-C, 254nm wavelength) to inactivate microorganisms by damaging their DNA and RNA. UV-C radiation at 254nm is strongly absorbed by nucleic acids — the DNA helix absorbs UV-C energy and forms covalent bonds between adjacent thymine bases (thymine dimers), which physically prevents the DNA from being read by the organism's replication machinery. Bacteria and viruses with UV-C-damaged DNA cannot replicate and are rendered non-infectious, even though they may remain physically present in the water. The "E-Boiling" designation refers to the equivalence claim: Aquaguard states their UV E-Boiling Technology delivers purity equivalent to water boiled for over 20 minutes. Boiling at 100°C for 1 minute kills most pathogens; 20 minutes at 100°C provides substantial additional log reduction of more heat-resistant organisms. The 20-minute boiling equivalence positions UV E-Boiling as thorough disinfection beyond what brief heating achieves. The combination of RO + UV addresses a specific limitation of each technology alone: RO membranes achieve approximately 3–4 log (99.9–99.99%) removal of bacteria, but membrane integrity depends on the membrane's condition — minor defects can allow bacteria passage. UV provides an additional disinfection barrier after RO, ensuring that any microorganisms that pass through the membrane are inactivated before reaching the storage tank. The 99.9999% (6-log) bacteria reduction and 99.99% (4-log) virus reduction specifications reflect this combined RO + UV performance rather than either stage alone.
Delhi NCR water quality context — why RO+UV matters specifically for this region
Delhi NCR's drinking water quality presents a complex, multi-source contamination challenge that makes RO+UV purification particularly relevant. Municipal (DJB) supply water in Delhi is sourced from the Yamuna river and Bhakra canal — treated at DJB facilities but distributed through an aging pipe network where leakage and contamination ingress can occur between treatment plant and tap. Groundwater (borewell/tubewell) in Delhi NCR is affected by: nitrate contamination from agricultural runoff and sewage percolation (elevated nitrate causes methemoglobinemia in infants); fluoride (excess fluoride at >1.5 mg/L causes dental and skeletal fluorosis — the BIS safe limit is 1.0 mg/L, and several Delhi NCR groundwater surveys have found fluoride levels of 1.5–3.5 mg/L in areas including parts of South Delhi, Faridabad, and Gurugram); iron (orange-staining and metallic taste); arsenic (in some areas); and TDS typically 300–2000+ ppm. Tanker water supply — used extensively in areas without municipal connections or with seasonal municipal supply interruptions — has no consistent quality standard and is frequently contaminated with total coliforms, E. coli, and elevated TDS. The Sure Champ's 2000 ppm TDS input rating covers the full range of Delhi NCR groundwater and tanker supply quality. For Delhi NCR households specifically, the most critical purification requirements are: TDS reduction (all sources), nitrate reduction (borewell), fluoride reduction (borewell in fluoride-affected areas), E. coli elimination (tanker/municipal supply contamination), and virus removal (relevant given sewage infrastructure limitations). RO addresses TDS, nitrate, fluoride, and heavy metals; UV addresses microbiological load — making RO+UV the appropriate technology combination for the full Delhi NCR water quality risk profile.
