Manufacturers use "water resistant" loosely, so it's worth knowing what this rating actually certifies. The 6 is the dust figure, and it's the top of the scale — completely dust-tight, which matters at a construction site, on a building terrace, or through a Delhi dust storm. The 7 is the water figure: tested for full immersion, not just splashes or rain. So this isn't a speaker you move indoors when it starts raining — it can go by the pool, into the bathroom, onto a boat, or sit out on the balcony through a monsoon shower. And because it floats, dropping it in water means picking it up again rather than losing it. Rinse it under a tap after sand or salt water, and dry it before charging.
PositionIQ — why a portable speaker needs to know which way up it is
A speaker is tuned for one orientation, usually standing upright and firing forward. The trouble is that nobody uses a portable speaker that way. It gets laid flat on a table, hung from a tent pole or a shower rail, clipped upside down to a rucksack, or propped against a wall — and in each of those positions the sound reaching you changes, usually losing clarity or bass. PositionIQ detects the orientation and adjusts the audio output to suit it. The practical effect is that the speaker sounds right in the position you actually put it in, rather than only in the one the designers assumed. On a speaker designed to be carried and thrown down anywhere, that's a genuinely useful piece of engineering rather than a spec-sheet line.
Two speakers — stereo, or twice the room
Any single portable speaker has the same limitation: one box in one place, so the sound comes from one direction. Pair two compatible Bose speakers with the shortcut button on each and you get two ways out of that. Stereo Mode splits left and right channels between them, so instruments and voices sit in space the way the recording intended — worth doing at home on a shelf or a table. Party Mode plays the same audio through both, which is what you want on a terrace or a lawn where one speaker can't cover the space and people are spread out. Worth mentioning to anyone buying a first one: a second can be added later, so the upgrade path costs nothing today.
