A cooler is not a cheap air conditioner, and anyone who sells you one without saying so is setting you up for disappointment. It cools by evaporating water into the air — which means it works brilliantly when the air is dry and hot, and poorly when the air is already humid. In Delhi that maps almost exactly onto the calendar. From roughly April to the end of June, when it is 42°C and bone dry, this machine makes a real difference for 130 watts — roughly a tenth of what an air conditioner draws. Once the monsoon arrives in July and humidity climbs, evaporation slows, the cooling effect fades, and adding moisture to already-damp air makes a room feel worse rather than better. If you need cooling in July and August, you need an AC and we'll say so. If you want to get through the dry heat cheaply — or you need something that runs on an inverter through a power cut — this is the right machine.

Most buyers compare personal coolers on air delivery and price, and then live with the tank for the next three summers. A typical personal cooler carries fifteen to twenty litres, which on a hot afternoon at full speed means refilling once or twice a day — and in practice it means the cooler runs dry at three in the morning and you wake up hot. This one holds 35 litres in the same class of machine. That is the difference between filling it every day and filling it every second or third day, and it's why this model works for overnight running in a bedroom. The water level indicator is on the outside, so you can see where you stand without opening anything. The trade is weight — 8.5 kg empty, considerably more full — so decide where it lives before you fill it.

Ask anyone whose cooler died in year two and it was almost always the pump. Delhi water is hard and high in dissolved solids, and in an ordinary pump that mineral load builds into scale until the impeller jams — usually in the middle of May. The Everlast pump is built specifically for that condition, and on a machine running ten hours a day for three months it's the specification most worth having. The honeycomb pads hold far more water than the old wood-wool type, so you get more cooling from the same airflow, and they don't rot or collapse the way khus pads do — though they remain a wear item, so ask us the pad price when you buy. The mosquito net over the tank matters more than it sounds: an open water tank in a Delhi bedroom is a breeding site, and the net is what stops that. Still drain the tank when the cooler isn't in use.

Its cooling effect depends fundamentally on ambient humidity: performance is highest in hot, dry conditions and reduces significantly as humidity rises, including during and after the monsoon. Evaporative cooling increases the moisture content of room air, and the appliance requires continuous ventilation — an open window or door — to work as intended; operating it in a closed or sealed room will progressively reduce and then eliminate its cooling effect and may cause dampness.
