Watching an Airwrap work for the first time is genuinely startling: you hold the barrel near a section of damp hair and the hair lifts, reaches out and wraps itself around, without you touching it. It looks like a magic trick and it is simply fluid dynamics. The effect is called Coanda, and it describes something counter-intuitive about moving air: a fast jet passing along a curved surface clings to that curve and follows it around instead of carrying straight on. Air is blown out of slots along the barrel so it hugs the barrel's surface and spirals around it. A fast-moving stream of air is also at lower pressure than the still air beside it, so nearby hair is drawn into it — and once caught, it follows the spiralling air around the barrel and lies there. The curl then forms as the hair dries in that wrapped position. What matters practically is what's absent: no clamping the hair between hot surfaces, no plates, no mechanical pressure. The hair is shaped by air and set by cooling. Come and watch it once — it converts people better than any paragraph.
The Bluetooth question — do you have to use the app?
This is the thing people worry about at this price and it deserves a straight answer, so here's ours: no. The i.d. curl™ system and the MyDyson™ app are a personalisation layer sitting on top of a styling tool that works perfectly well on its own controls. The app's actual job is repeatability. Curling is a timing skill — how long you hold each section, at what heat, in which direction — and the reason home results vary is that people do it slightly differently every time. Saving a routine means the machine runs the same sequence at the same settings on Tuesday as it did on Saturday. That's genuinely useful if you're learning, and much less so if you already know what you're doing. Two honest caveats. App features, phone compatibility and long-term support are Dyson's to change, not ours — so buy this for the Coanda styling, which is permanent, and treat the app as a bonus rather than the reason. And if you'd rather not connect an appliance to a phone at all, you lose nothing structural.
