Here is what actually happens with an ordinary straightener, and it is worth picturing because it explains the whole design. You clamp a section between two rigid flat plates. The hair in the middle gets pressed hard; the hair at the edges squeezes out sideways and escapes untouched. So you go back over the same section a second time, and often a third, to catch what got away. Now think about total heat exposure — because that, not the number on the display, is what your hair actually experiences. Three passes at 185°C put far more heat through a section than one pass at 210°C. Dyson's plates are made from a manganese copper alloy that flexes: they curve around the section and gather the hair inwards instead of letting it squirt out at the sides. More of the hair is in contact, evenly, on the first pass. Dyson's own testing supports a claim of 50% less breakage against their stated comparison, footnoted in their material. The practical version is simpler: get it right in one pass and you have halved the heat regardless.
Cord-free — and the two things worth knowing before you rely on it
Being off the cable is genuinely liberating with a straightener. You are not tethered to one socket, you can turn your head freely, and reaching the back of your own head stops being a wrestling match with a cable. The battery is a four-cell lithium-ion pack borrowed from Dyson's cordless vacuum work, and it delivers the thermal performance of a corded tool rather than fading as it drains. Two honest points. First, thirty minutes is up to thirty minutes, and thick or long hair on the highest setting will use it faster — which is exactly why hybrid charge mode exists, drawing from cable and battery while styling and topping up between passes. If you have a lot of hair, start fully charged and simply style with the cord in. Second, on travel: universal voltage and the flight-ready feature mean this is designed to go abroad with you, but lithium batteries are subject to airline rules. Use the flight-ready tag, carry it in your hand luggage, and check your airline's policy before you fly.

Start at the lowest setting that works and only go up if the result asks for it. The OLED screen shows your temperature and battery clearly — which is the point of putting a screen on a straightener: no guessing whether it is ready or which setting you left it on.
