This is the distinction worth understanding before comparing any two purifiers, because it's where most of them quietly fall short. Almost every purifier on the market advertises a HEPA filter — but a HEPA filter inside a machine that isn't sealed around it lets air take the easy route: around the edges of the filter and back out the vent, unfiltered. You get the certificate without the clean air. Dyson seals the entire machine to HEPA H13 standard, at 24 critical points, so all the air that leaves has actually passed through the media. It's an unglamorous engineering detail and it's the whole reason this performs differently in a real room.
Formaldehyde — the pollutant that comes from inside your house
Most people buying a purifier in Delhi are thinking about what comes in from outside. Formaldehyde is the one that doesn't. It off-gasses continuously from new furniture, plywood, laminates, paints, adhesives and soft furnishings — which is precisely why a newly done-up flat can smell "new" for months. It's a gas 500 times smaller than 0.1 micron, so a HEPA filter cannot catch it at all. The HP12's selective catalytic oxidation filter breaks formaldehyde down at a molecular level and destroys it — and because it destroys rather than traps, that filter never needs replacing for the life of the machine. If you've recently renovated or bought new furniture, this is the feature that matters most.

The honest way to judge a purifier is that it replaces three appliances and runs all year. October to January it's a purifier through Delhi's worst air. Through winter it's a heater with a thermostat that cuts out at your target temperature and restarts as needed. Three sensors analyse the air continuously and an algorithm cross-checks every second, so in Auto mode the machine raises purification the moment pollution rises. The 24-hour graph is the genuinely useful bit — you can see your air spike when cooking starts, or when a window is opened onto the road.
