How an air cooler works — and where it works well

An air cooler is not an air conditioner. It pulls air through wet honeycomb pads, and the water evaporating out of those pads is what cools the air — which also means it adds moisture to the room. In Delhi's dry heat from April to June that works extremely well, at a fraction of an AC's running cost. Once the monsoon arrives and humidity rises, evaporation slows and a cooler becomes noticeably less effective. It also needs a window or door open to work properly — a cooler in a sealed room just makes the room damp. Worth knowing before you buy, not after.

185 Watts.
Your Inverter Will Carry It Through the Cut.

A 70 litre desert cooler that keeps running when the power goes · just 185 watts, roughly a tenth of what an air conditioner draws, so any reasonable home inverter keeps it going through a Delhi power cut — which is exactly when a room becomes unbearable · a 70 litre tank for long hours between refills · honeycomb pads on three sides with Bacteria Shield treatment · a dedicated ice chamber for the worst afternoons · a bed-height fan so the air actually reaches you lying down · 4-way deflection with motorised vertical louvers · 3 speeds, a water level indicator, thermal overload protection and castors with front brakes

wattsthe number that matters in a power cut

This is the specification worth understanding, because it changes what the cooler is for. A 1.5 ton air conditioner draws well over a kilowatt and no domestic inverter will carry it. At 185 watts this cooler sits comfortably within the capacity of an ordinary home inverter — around the draw of two ceiling fans. So when the power goes at three in the afternoon in June, the cooler keeps running while the AC sits dead. That is not a small thing in Delhi NCR, and it is the honest reason many households keep a cooler even after installing air conditioning. It also means the running cost over a summer is a fraction of an AC's. One caution: inverter capacity, battery condition and whatever else is already connected all matter, so check what your inverter is carrying before assuming. Tell us your inverter rating and we will tell you honestly whether it will cope.

🛏️

Bed-height fan — a small design decision that changes how it feels

Most desert coolers put the fan low in the body, which means the air stream travels along the floor. Standing up that is fine. Lying on a bed, it means the cool air passes underneath you and you feel very little of it, which is why people end up dragging the cooler closer and closer through the night. The KoolGrande positions the fan higher, at roughly bed height, so the air arrives at the level you are actually resting at. Combined with the 4-way deflection — motorised vertical louvers that sweep on their own, plus horizontal louvers you set by hand — you can aim the stream at the bed or spread it across a sitting area. It is the sort of detail that does not show up on a spec comparison but is immediately obvious the first night you use it.

🍯

Three-sided pads, an ice chamber, and how to keep it from smelling

Cooling pads on three sides give the fan far more wet surface to draw air through than a single-sided cooler, which is where the cooling capacity comes from. The ice chamber is a separate compartment for ice, and it does help — dropping the water temperature lowers the air temperature further — though it is a short-term boost for the worst part of the afternoon rather than something you run all day. The Bacteria Shield treatment addresses the genuine weakness of every evaporative cooler: pads stay wet, and warm wet material grows mould, which is why a neglected cooler smells musty by its second season. The coating slows that but does not replace maintenance. Drain the tank when it will stand unused for more than a couple of days, rinse the pads through the season, and run the fan dry for a few minutes before storing it in autumn.

🛡️

Thermal overload protection and the water level indicator

Two unglamorous features that decide whether a cooler survives a Delhi summer. The pump in an air cooler is the part that fails first, and it fails when it runs dry — someone forgets to refill, the pump keeps running with no water, and it burns out. The external water level indicator means you can see the level at a glance without opening anything, so the tank gets refilled before that happens. Thermal overload protection is the backstop: if the motor overheats for any reason — a blocked intake, a stalled fan, running in an enclosed corner — it cuts power automatically rather than continuing until something is damaged. On a machine that runs ten hours a day for three months in 45°C heat, both of these are the difference between a cooler that lasts several summers and one that needs a pump replaced in year two.

🎯 Suited to

Large Bedrooms Living Rooms & Halls Homes With Frequent Power Cuts Shops & Offices Covered Terraces & Verandas Anyone Who Wants Cooling Without An AC Bill

117 cm tall on a 62 × 48.5 cm footprint, so it needs a proper corner rather than a gap beside furniture. For a shop floor or workshop, ask us about the 100 litre commercial model instead — it moves roughly twice the air.

🧊 Dedicated Ice Chamber

A separate compartment for ice, giving an extra drop in temperature through the hottest part of the afternoon.

🔄 4-Way Air Deflection

Motorised vertical louvers sweep automatically; horizontal louvers set by hand. Aim it at the bed or spread it across a room.

🛞 360° Castors With Front Brakes

Moves easily between rooms, then locks in place — worth having on a unit this tall so it does not drift when nudged.

⚙️ Aluminium Wound Motor

Three speeds so you can run it gently overnight or hard through the afternoon, with an auto swing setting.

⚠️ A mains appliance holding 70 litres of water. Please read this. 1. Water and electricity together demand a properly earthed connection. The 3-pin cord must go into a correctly rated, earthed socket — never a light-duty extension board. 2. Keep the plug, cord and controls dry when filling the tank or rinsing the pads. 3. Switch off and unplug before filling, draining, cleaning or moving it. 4. A cooler needs ventilation. Run it with a window or door open; in a sealed room it raises humidity, stops cooling and leaves surfaces damp. 5. Never run the pump with the tank empty — this is the commonest way a cooler pump fails. Watch the water level indicator. 6. Drain the tank if it will stand unused for more than a couple of days. Standing water in a warm tank breeds bacteria and mosquitoes; in Delhi that is a dengue risk, not just a hygiene one. 7. Rinse the pads and tank through the season, and run the fan dry before storing at the end of summer. 8. Stand it level on a firm floor and apply the front brakes. At 117 cm tall and full of water it can tip on an uneven surface. 9. Move it empty — do not wheel a full 70 litre cooler. 10. Keep fingers and objects clear of the fan grille, and do not let children climb on it or play with the water. 11. Do not add perfumes, phenyl or any chemical to the water unless the manual permits it. 12. Do not use it outdoors in rain or where it can be splashed, and do not tilt it while filled. 13. Do not block the air intake or outlet. 14. Stop using it and call us if it trips your supply, if you see water near electrical parts, if the motor is unusually loud, or if you smell burning.

Warranty as per Havells terms and conditions — 1 year comprehensive manufacturer warranty as stated in supplier material. The scope of cover, coverage of the motor, pump, louver and swing mechanism, honeycomb pads, castor wheels, plastic body and accessories, parts and labour, exclusions, product registration and the service process are subject to Havells brand policy and the final invoice or warranty documentation. Cooling pads and the water pump are consumable or wear items on evaporative coolers and their warranty treatment should be confirmed before purchase. Damage arising from running the pump without adequate water, use of dirty or stagnant water, blocking the air intake or outlet, tilting the unit while filled, water ingress to electrical components, unsuitable or unearthed electrical supply or unauthorised servicing is commonly excluded. Air delivery, recommended room size, noise level, remote control availability and product weight are not stated in supplier material and should be confirmed before purchase; air delivery in particular is the figure that determines suitability for a given room size. Some images on this listing appear to depict the 90 L KoolGrande model rather than the 70 L GHRACBKE070 described here; the model designation on the product carton and invoice should be treated as definitive and confirmed at delivery. Tank capacity, power consumption of 185 W, fan size, dimensions and other figures are manufacturer specifications determined under their own test conditions; actual cooling performance, runtime per tank, ice chamber effect and water consumption vary substantially with ambient temperature, relative humidity, ventilation and cross-airflow, room size and ceiling height, occupancy, water level and quality, ice quantity, pad and pump condition, selected speed, placement and supply voltage. This product is an evaporative air cooler and not an air conditioner: it cools by evaporating water into the air stream and therefore increases the humidity of the space, its effectiveness reduces significantly as ambient humidity rises, and it requires continuous ventilation with an open window or door to function correctly. No specific temperature reduction is claimed or guaranteed. Inverter compatibility depends on the capacity and condition of the purchaser's inverter and battery and on the total load connected; the stated 185 W figure and the comparison with other appliances are provided as general context. Running cost depends on the applicable electricity tariff and usage. The Bacteria Shield description of the cooling pad treatment is the manufacturer's own product description; this product is a household appliance and not a medical device, no antibacterial, antimicrobial, air-purification, allergen-removal or health outcome is claimed or implied by Mahajan Electronics, and it is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Regular draining and cleaning remain necessary regardless of any pad treatment. Standing water must not be left in the tank when the appliance is unused, both for hygiene and because stagnant water can support mosquito breeding. The appliance must be connected to a properly earthed supply, switched off and disconnected before filling, draining, cleaning or moving, placed level on a firm floor with the brakes applied, moved only when empty, and must not be used outdoors in rain, tilted while filled or exposed to splashing. Electrical components, cord and controls must be kept dry. Fingers and objects must be kept clear of the fan grille and children must not be permitted to climb on the appliance or play with the water. Additives must not be introduced into the water tank unless expressly permitted by the manufacturer. Discontinue use and seek service if the appliance trips the electrical supply, if water is observed near electrical components, if the motor becomes unusually noisy or if burning odour is detected.
