How an air cooler works — and where it works well
An air cooler is not an air conditioner. It pulls air through wet honeycomb pads, and the water evaporating out of those pads is what cools the air — which also means it adds moisture to the room. In Delhi's dry heat from April to June that works extremely well, at a fraction of an AC's running cost. Once the monsoon arrives and humidity rises, evaporation slows and a cooler becomes noticeably less effective. It also needs a window or door open to work properly — a cooler in a sealed room just makes the room damp. Worth knowing before you buy, not after.
