The single most common reason an Indian kitchen doesn't have a dishwasher is that there's nowhere to put one. A standard machine is 60 cm wide, and in a fitted kitchen that means sacrificing a full cabinet run. A place setting is the European measure — one dinner plate, side plate, bowl, glass, cup, saucer and cutlery per person. Scrape the solids off first — a dishwasher isn't a bin, and dal or rice residue is what clogs the filter. And load with space between items so water reaches every surface. Get those three right and it will genuinely clean better than hand washing — hotter water than your hands can stand is the whole advantage.
