An iron works by pressing: heat plus weight, flattening the fabric against a board. That is exactly right for a cotton shirt and exactly wrong for a great many other things. A structured suit jacket has shoulder padding and a canvassed front that an iron crushes. A heavily embroidered lehenga or a zari saree has raised work that flattens permanently under a hot plate. Pleats, gathers, velvet, chiffon and anything with a nap all lose their texture when pressed. A steamer works differently — it relaxes the fibres with heat and moisture while the garment hangs, so the wrinkles fall out under the garment's own weight and nothing gets flattened. How to actually use it — the technique nobody explains
A steamer used badly gives disappointing results, and the fix is three habits. First, work top to bottom in slow downward strokes, with light tension on the fabric — pull the hem gently with your free hand so the garment has something to straighten against. Gravity does most of the work; you are just relaxing the fibres. Second, keep the head close but not pressed hard against the cloth — steam needs a moment to penetrate, and pressing turns it back into an iron. Third, use the fabric brush for anything thick. Coats, jackets, curtains and heavy cotton need the steam pushed into the weave rather than sitting on the surface, and that is precisely what the bristles do. Let garments hang for a few minutes afterwards before wearing or folding — they're slightly damp, and they finish setting as they dry.
