Ultra Filtration (UF) + TDS Control — what these two stages add beyond standard RO+UV
The KENT Grand Plus includes two purification elements not present in all RO systems. Ultra Filtration (UF) uses a hollow fibre membrane with pore sizes of 0.01–0.1 microns — smaller than the 0.3 micron rating of H14 HEPA but larger than the RO membrane's 0.0001 micron rating. UF occupies a useful position between RO and UV: RO membranes remove dissolved contaminants by pressure-driven passage through a semi-permeable membrane; UV deactivates microorganisms by DNA disruption; but neither specifically targets colloidal particles (fine clay, organic macro-molecules, residual turbidity) that are too small to be caught by a sediment pre-filter and too large to be detected as dissolved TDS by the RO membrane's TDS measurement. UF's 0.01–0.1 micron pores trap these colloidal particles, improving water clarity and removing residual particles that might carry adsorbed bacteria not fully deactivated by UV. The TDS Control System is a blending valve that addresses RO's fundamental limitation: RO membranes remove approximately 90–95% of dissolved solids including both harmful dissolved salts (heavy metals, fluoride, arsenic) and beneficial minerals (calcium, magnesium). A fully RO-purified water at 0–50 ppm TDS has a flat taste and lacks the Ca and Mg that contribute to recommended daily mineral intake. RO membranes operate on a cross-flow filtration principle — pressurised feed water flows across the membrane surface, a portion permeates through as purified product water, and the remainder (the concentrate or reject) continues along the membrane surface and exits as reject water carrying the concentrated dissolved salts removed from the product water. In a standard home RO system, this reject water is discharged to drain.
