Dolby Digital + DTS Digital Surround — how these audio formats decode cinema sound from a 2.1 soundbar
Dolby Digital (AC-3) and DTS Digital Surround are lossy audio compression codecs developed for cinema and home video applications. A standard movie or TV show audio track encodes audio for 5.1 channels (left, centre, right, surround left, surround right, subwoofer) or higher channel counts using either Dolby Digital or DTS compression — these formats encode directional audio information (which sounds come from left, which from right, dialogue from centre, bass from subwoofer) in a compact bitstream that is carried over HDMI or optical connections from a television or set-top box to the soundbar. When the LG S40T decodes a Dolby Digital or DTS bitstream, its Digital Signal Processor (DSP) extracts the directional audio information and uses psychoacoustic processing to create a perceived surround field from the soundbar's physical speaker configuration.
