50's Retro Italian design. Glossy Green.
The SMEG KLF05PGEU is a 0.8L (3-cup) mini electric kettle from SMEG's iconic 50's Retro collection — combining 1400W fast heating with double-wall insulation (stainless steel inner for heat retention, cool-touch plastic outer), triple auto shut-off (boiling, low water, lifted from base), fixed scale filter, anti-drip spout, 360° rotational base, water level indicator, and built-in cord wrap. An Italian-designed kitchen luxury that performs as beautifully as it looks.
🛡️ Double Wall construction — inner stainless steel + cool-touch outer
Inner Wall — Stainless Steel
- ✔ Food-grade SS — no taste or odour transfer to water
- ✔ High thermal mass — retains heat after boiling
- ✔ Resists limescale adhesion better than plastic
- ✔ Hygienic — non-porous, easy to clean
- ✔ Durable — does not degrade with repeated heating cycles
Outer Wall — Cool-Touch Plastic
- ✔ Air gap between inner SS and outer plastic insulates
- ✔ Outer surface stays cool to touch during boiling
- ✔ Safe for households with children
- ✔ Lighter than full-SS exterior — keeps 0.9kg overall weight
- ✔ Allows premium colour finish (SMEG Glossy Green)
🎨 SMEG 50's Retro design — what makes it distinctive in a kitchen
Glossy Green Finish
Distinctive pastel-adjacent emerald tone from SMEG's 50's palette — not available in standard appliance ranges. Makes the kettle a kitchen focal point rather than a background appliance.
Chrome Detailing
Chrome-finished lid knob, handle accents, and spout — contrasts the green body for a period-correct retro aesthetic drawn from 1950s Italian industrial design.
Die-Cast Knob
Weighted die-cast lid knob — feels premium in hand. Opens lid to 80° for easy filling without removing lid entirely.
Proportioned Form
0.8L capacity at a deliberately reduced scale — the kettle's proportions mimic a full-size retro kettle in miniature, maintaining aesthetic harmony on countertops of any size.
50's Silhouette
Curved body profile referencing 1950s appliance design — round shoulders, compact base, upright stance. Complements SMEG toasters, coffee machines, and blenders in the same retro range.
Colour Range Context
SMEG 50's Retro available in Pastel Green, Cream, Black, Red, Pink, and others — each colour is a specific SMEG-designed shade, not a generic colour. Pastel Green (PG) is one of the range's signature palette choices.
Triple auto shut-off — three independent safety triggers and why each matters
The SMEG KLF05PGEU incorporates three independent auto shut-off triggers — each addressing a distinct failure scenario that can occur during normal electric kettle use. First, boil-dry auto shut-off: when water reaches 100°C and begins producing steam, a bimetallic strip or thermistor sensor detects the rapid temperature rise (or the steam itself, depending on mechanism design) and triggers the power cut-off — this is the standard shut-off that prevents water from boiling beyond 100°C continuously, which would eventually exhaust the water and heat the empty element to destructive temperatures. Second, low-water auto shut-off: if the kettle is switched on with insufficient water (below the minimum fill line), a separate sensor or the same temperature sensor detects the abnormally rapid heating rate of a small water volume and cuts power before the element is damaged — this protects against the common scenario of someone switching the kettle on after already pouring most of the previously boiled water, leaving only residual water in the base. Third, lifted-from-base shut-off: the 360° rotational base contains the power contacts that supply electricity to the kettle — when the kettle is lifted from the base, the electrical circuit is physically broken and power to the element stops immediately. This prevents the kettle from continuing to heat if accidentally tipped or picked up while on. The combination of all three triggers makes the KLF05PGEU effectively impossible to use unsafely in normal household conditions — the element cannot overheat, cannot run dry, and cannot operate while not correctly seated. For households with elderly members or distracted users, this triple-redundancy safety system provides genuine peace of mind beyond what a single shut-off provides.
Fixed scale filter — limescale in Delhi NCR water and why filtration matters in a kettle
Delhi NCR's municipal water supply has TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) of 200–500 ppm in most distribution areas, with significant calcium and magnesium hardness. When hard water is boiled in a kettle, calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and magnesium carbonate (MgCO₃) precipitate from solution as the water temperature rises — calcium solubility decreases with increasing temperature, causing dissolved calcium ions to form insoluble calcium carbonate crystals on the heated element surface and on the kettle interior walls. This white or off-white chalky deposit is limescale. In a kettle without a scale filter, small limescale flakes that detach from the element or walls are poured directly into the boiled water — and subsequently into the tea, coffee, or other beverage being prepared. While limescale is not hazardous to health, it produces visible white particles in beverages, creates a chalky taste that interferes with the flavour of tea and coffee, and clogs fine coffee equipment (espresso machines, pour-over filters) over time. The SMEG KLF05PGEU's fixed scale filter is located at the spout — it is a mesh filter integrated into the spout opening that catches limescale particles as water is poured, preventing them from entering the cup. "Fixed" refers to the filter being built into the spout rather than being a removable/replaceable insert — it should be cleaned periodically (brushing under running water) to prevent the accumulated limescale from reducing water flow through the filter. For Delhi NCR's harder water areas (TDS above 350 ppm), periodic descaling of the kettle interior (citric acid solution soaked for 30–60 minutes, then rinsed) is recommended every 1–2 months to prevent element efficiency loss from scale buildup on the heating element.
1400W at 0.8L — boiling time and energy efficiency in a mini kettle
The relationship between kettle power rating, water volume, and boiling time is governed by the fundamental heat equation Q = mcΔT, where Q is the heat energy required (joules), m is the mass of water (kg), c is the specific heat capacity of water (4,186 J/kg·°C), and ΔT is the temperature rise required (°C). For 0.8L of water starting at Delhi NCR's typical tap water temperature of 28–32°C in summer (ΔT ≈ 68–72°C to reach 100°C): Q = 0.8 × 4,186 × 70 = approximately 234,000 joules. At 1400W power input and assuming 85% thermal efficiency (accounting for heat lost to the kettle body and element heating losses): time = 234,000 ÷ (1400 × 0.85) = approximately 197 seconds ≈ 3.3 minutes for a full 0.8L. For 2 cups (approximately 0.5L): ≈ 2 minutes. For 1 cup (approximately 0.25L): ≈ 1 minute. The 1400W rating is at the lower end of the kettle power range (full-size kettles typically use 1500–3000W) — the reduced power relative to full-size kettles is appropriate for the 0.8L capacity, as higher wattage in a small volume would heat the water so quickly that the element thermal cutout would need to be very precisely calibrated to prevent overshoot. The 1400W + 0.8L combination delivers boiling times of 2–3.5 minutes, which is competitive with standard 2L kettles at 2000W for equivalent cup quantities. For a single-person or couple use case where boiling 3 cups at once is the maximum requirement, this power-to-volume ratio is well optimised. The energy consumed per full 0.8L boil: 1400W × (3.3/60) hours = approximately 77 Wh = ₹0.77 at ₹10/kWh — approximately 1 paisa less than a 2000W kettle boiling the same 0.8L volume (which completes in 2.3 minutes at 77 Wh). The energy efficiency per cup is essentially equivalent between kettle sizes when filling only what is needed.
