Most kitchen appliances are bought to be used and hidden. SMEG built a business on the opposite idea. The TSF01 is the toaster that made retro appliances a category — a glossy black body with chrome accents and unmistakable 1950s Italian styling, finished to a standard that means it earns its place on a countertop rather than being pushed behind a cupboard door. In a modern kitchen it's a piece of design; in a traditional one it's a warm contrast. This is the honest reason people buy a SMEG toaster, and it's a perfectly good one — you look at it every morning, and it's built to still look right in ten years.
The commonest fault in a toaster isn't heat, it's position. A thin slice sits loose in a wide slot, drifting against one element and away from the other, and comes out dark on one face and pale on the reverse. Self-centering racks in each compartment grip the bread and hold it in the middle of the slot whatever size the slice is — so the heat reaches both faces equally. Combined with 36 mm wide slots, that means thick artisan sourdough, a bagel half and ordinary sandwich bread all toast evenly in the same machine, without you turning them over halfway.
Defrost toasts frozen bread straight from the freezer, running a thaw cycle first so the middle isn't cold when the outside is done — which is what makes keeping a loaf in the freezer practical. Reheat warms toast that's gone cold, or takes it a little further if the first attempt wasn't quite dark enough, without burning it. And Bagel browns only the cut face while gently warming the other, which is exactly how a bagel should be toasted and something a plain toaster simply cannot do. Three buttons, three problems that would otherwise be yours to work around.

PRACTICAL ACCESSORIES
Sandwich racks facilitate the heating of the bread with desired filling, and the bun warmer can be used to heat paninis, focaccia, or brioche, and serve them warm directly to the table.
REHEAT to heat toast or slices of bread, or to continue toasting if the result was not satisfactory, DEFROST to unfreeze frozen slices of bread, and BAGEL to brown just one side of the bread without toasting the other.
